Queens Of The Stone Age (QOTSA)

Queens Of The Stone Age is an American rock band from Seattle. The band was formed in 1996 by the vocalist and guitarist Josh Homme. Homme’s original band recorded an EP under the band name Gamma Ray, before being threatened with a legal case by a German metal band with the same name. In 1997, Homme changed their name to "Queens of the Stone Age". According to Homme, the band opted for Queen instead of King because “Rock should be heavy enough for the boys and sweet enough for the girls. That way everyone's happy and it's more of a party.”

QOTSA released their first self-titled debut album in 1998 on  Loosegroove Records, and on Vinyl with Man's Ruin Records. The album was recorded with Homme singing and playing all the instruments apart from the drums, which were recorded by Alfredo Hernández. The band’s second album, Rated R, was released in 2000 with hit singles "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret" and fan favorite "Feel Good Hit of the Summer". The album led QOTSA to open for The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Hole and play at major festivals Ozzfest 2000 and Rock in Rio in 2001.

It wasn’t until their third album, Songs for the Deaf, in 2002 when the band gained its major mainstream breakthrough. The album features Dave Grohl on drums and many other guests such as Paz Lenchantin and Troy Van Leeuwen (A Perfect Circle) and Dean Ween. The album became a Certified Gold album in 2003 with almost a Million copies sold. Some of the band’s most iconic hits of all time come from Songs for the Deaf, such as “No One Knows” and “Go with the Flow”. In support of the album, Queens Of The Stone Age headlined across Australia and Europe. The band’s mainstream success continued with the release of their fourth album, Lullabies to Paralyze, in 2005. The album became QOTSA's greatest debut at number 5 on the Billboard Music Chart, until later overthrown by their future album, …Like Clockwork (2013). The band supported Nine Inch Nails on their “With Teeth” tour.

From Mid 2000’s to 2011, QOTSA released Era Vulgaris (2007), toured internationally and worked with rock masters Trent Reznor, Julian Casablancas, Billy Gibbons, and long time friend Dave Grohl. In 2010, Homme suffered from multiple health complications which bedbonded him for months in hopes of recovery. It was during this time that Homme considered ending his music career but instead it gave birth to the band’s renaissance era.

In 2013, Queens Of The Stone Age released what is now one of their most monumental albums, …Like Clockwork. The album features collaborations with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), Elton John, Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), and Brody Dalle. The album was led by hit single “My God Is The Sun” and debuted at number one position in the US, making it the first album from the band to reach such a ranking. Another single released from the album is “I Sat by the Ocean” which is Gold certified.

Leading up to the release of their seventh studio album, Villains, in 2017, QOTSA toured across Australia with Nine Inch Nails, performed at Rio de Janeiro, and their first performance at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan since 2003. The album release was led by the Gold and Platinum single “The Way You Used to Do”, and later released second single “The Evil Has Landed”. Queens Of The Stone Age released their eighth album, In Times New Roman… , in 2023, with hit singles “Emotion Sickness", "Carnavoyeur", and "Paper Machete".

Current band members of QOTSA are Josh Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen on the guitar and backing vocals, Michael Shuman on bass, Dean Fertita on guitar, and Jon Theodore on the drums. Their music style is often described as alternative rock, hard rock and alternative metal. To date, they have released nine studio albums and 14 singles. QOTSA has accumulated a global fan base, with over 7 Million monthly listeners on Spotify.
