Vampire Weekend is an American rock band from New York City. Formed in 2006 by lead vocalist and guitarist Ezra Koenig, Chris Tomson on the drums, bassist Chris Baio, and now ex member Rostam Batmanglij, a multi-instrumentalist. The band’s name originates from Koenig’s short film project inspired by The Lost Boys (1987). In 2007, their single “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” was picked up by the media giant the Rolling Stone and was included on their “100 Best Songs of the Year" at number 67. Leading up to releasing their self-produced and self-titled debut album, Vampire Weekend toured the UK with The Shins, declared “The Year's Best New Band" by Spin magazine in 2008, appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, and performed on Saturday Night Live (SNL). The self-titled Vampire Weekend debut album was released in 2008 and has been recognized as one of the greatest debut albums. It peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200 and number 15 on the UK Album Chart with Platinum certificate in both countries.
Vampire Weekend’s second album, Contra, was released in 2010 and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 200, making it the 12th independent album to reach the spot since 1991 and first band to have done so without the backing of a record label. The album is certified Gold as it sold over 500,000 copies in the US alone and Millions worldwide. Contra’s release was led by hit single “Horchata” in 2009, followed by “Cousins”, “Giving Up the Gun”, and “Holiday”. In the video for “Giving Up the Gun” cameos from RZA, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lil Jon, and Joe Jonas were included. In 2011, former US President Barack Obama added Vampire Weekend to a short list of musicians which he sought support from for his reelection campaign.
The band’s growing success continues with the release of their third studio album, Modern Vampires of the City, in 2013. The album was teased with hit singles "Diane Young" and "Ya Hey", and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard. With two No. 1 albums in two consecutive releases, Vampire Weekend became the first independent rock band to enter the charts at number one. In 2014, the album won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album and has been certified Gold by RIAA.
In support of their fourth album, Father of the Bride, the band released two singles, "Harmony Hall" and "2021". The album was released in 2019 and was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Alternative Music Album for Father of the Bride and Best Rock Song for "Harmony Hall" at the 2020 Grammy Awards. In 2024, Vampire Weekend released their fifth studio album, Only God Was Above Us, with singles "Capricorn" and "Gen-X Cops".
