The Lion King at Saenger Theatre

The Lion King shares the struggles of the young Lion Prince Simba, who before long has no choice but to come to terms with his fate of becoming the leader of the Pride Lands due to the unexpected death of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a supported leader by all of the territory he rules, suffers betrayal from from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which ends in his murder. This forces the young prince into into hiding for a long period of time, and this is where the Prince's coming-of-age story and his subsequent return to The Pride Lands and his destined rule as King.

Based off the late 1994 film of the the very same name released by Disney, The play, The Lion King was skillfully transformed to the Broadway medium by director Julie Taymor and the impressive cast and creative team. Its debut in the 90s was a fresh addition to theater, being received positively by critics. Greg Evans of Variety summarizes the musical with very positive words in his article, sharing that “Julie Taymor's direction of Disney's The Lion King is a phenomenon, a theatrical achievement unrivaled in its beauty, brains and ingenuity. As courageous and daring as Simba himself, the stage adaptation greatly upgrades each and every component of the classic 1994 animated movie, from design elements and narrative to Lebo M's writing and the freshly African-based original numbers of Elton John and Tim Rice."

The ongoing musical was also received with the best posts from theatergoers. A specific review in particular makes mention of how this musical adaptation can aptly be considered “The best Broadway has to offer”, sharing how he experienced that “the show was fantastic. It was passionately put together and the score makes you feel all kinds of emotion. The crafted 3D puppets really carried the characters to life.” Most viewers who have attended the shows over the past 2 decades proclaim that despite being a second retelling of a movie, the musical went above and beyond the original.

The upcoming October’s production of Disney's The Lion King will be performing in Saenger Theatre at Louisiana on Thursday 22nd October 2026. Saenger Theatre, being equally alive and creative as the Broadway play with its naturally devised interior and exterior architecture is pointed to by theatergoers as the only option to stage The Lion King.
